Skincare Ingredients: What We Leave Out of Our Skincare—and Why It Matters

Flip over your favorite moisturizer and look at the skincare ingredients listed on the label.
How many do you recognize? More importantly, do you know why they're there?
Understanding skincare ingredients isn't about memorizing complicated names or becoming afraid of everything you can't pronounce. It's about knowing what you're putting on your skin, why an ingredient is included, and whether that product makes sense for you.
At Highland Tallow Co., our philosophy is simple:
Use ingredients with a purpose. Leave out the ones we don't need.
Skincare Ingredients: "Natural" Doesn't Automatically Mean Better
This is important.
Natural skincare shouldn't be about fear.
And an ingredient with a long or unfamiliar name isn't automatically harmful.
We would much rather teach our customers to become thoughtful label readers than convince them that everything they can't pronounce is "toxic."
Instead, we ask a different question when creating our products:
Does this skincare ingredient need to be here?
If it serves an important purpose—whether that's moisturizing the skin, keeping a water-based product safely preserved, creating a usable texture, or keeping ingredients properly combined—there may be a good reason for it.
If it doesn't serve our formula or our customers?
We don't need it.
We Don't Believe Skincare Needs to Be Complicated
The beauty industry has become very good at convincing us that our skin needs more.
More serums.
More acids.
More steps.
More active ingredients.
More products layered on top of one another.
But sometimes irritated, dry skin isn't asking for another active.
It's asking you to stop doing so much to it.
That's one reason tallow became the foundation of so many of our products.
Tallow is wonderfully simple.
It provides rich fatty acids that nourish the skin and works beautifully in minimalist formulations.
What About Fragrance?
This is another question worth discussing.
"Fragrance" can mean many different things depending on a product.
We prefer thoughtfully selected essential oils and simple scent blends when we scent our products, and we also believe customers should have an unscented option.
Because sometimes sensitive skin wants absolutely nothing extra.
That's why unscented skincare isn't an afterthought for us.
It's an important part of the collection.
What About Preservatives?
Here's where natural skincare conversations can become confusing.
You may hear that preservatives are always bad.
They're not.
Any skincare product containing water can provide an environment where bacteria, yeast, or mold can grow.
A properly formulated lotion therefore needs an appropriate preservation system.
A completely water-free balm is different.
This is one of the reasons it's important to understand the whole formula instead of judging an ingredient in isolation.
"Preservative-free" sounds appealing.
But in a water-based product, properly preserving the formula is part of making responsible skincare.
What We Want You to Ask
The next time you pick up a skincare product, don't simply look for the shortest ingredient list.
Ask:
What is the first ingredient?
Why are these ingredients here?
Is this product appropriate for what my skin actually needs?
Does the company clearly tell me what's inside?
And do I feel comfortable using it consistently?
Those questions tell you much more than marketing buzzwords ever will.
Simple Skincare Requires Trust
You shouldn't need a chemistry degree to buy moisturizer.
But you should be able to understand the philosophy behind the products you're putting on your family's skin.
That's why we're committed to keeping our formulas thoughtful and our ingredient conversations transparent.
We're not interested in convincing you to fear your skincare cabinet.
We'd rather help you understand it.
Because once you understand what your skin actually needs, skincare can become a whole lot simpler.
And simple has always been our favorite place to start.
