When you hear the words tallow skincare, what do you picture?
A thick, heavy balm?
Something you'd use in the middle of January when your skin is dry, and the heat has been running nonstop?
That's understandable.
But tallow isn't just a cold-weather moisturizer.
In fact, August can be one of the best times to introduce tallow into your skincare routine—especially if your skin has spent the summer dealing with sun, heat, swimming, air conditioning, shaving, and frequent showers.
The secret is knowing how to use it.
First: Is Tallow Skincare Too Heavy or Greasy for Summer?

It can—if you use too much.
This is probably one of the biggest mistakes people make when trying tallow for the first time.
Tallow balm isn't the same as a conventional body lotion.
You don't need a big handful.
Start with a very small amount, warm it between your fingers, and massage it into your skin.
Your skin should feel soft and nourished—not coated.
If you're still greasy 20 minutes later, that's usually a sign that you used more than your skin needed.
With tallow, less really is more.
Why Use Tallow Skincare in August?
Summer can be surprisingly hard on skin.
We're outdoors more.
We're exposed to more sun.
We swim.
We sweat.
We shower more frequently.
We shave more often.
And then we spend hours inside air-conditioned homes, cars, stores, and offices.
All of those things can affect how our skin feels.
You may not have the flaky winter dryness you're used to seeing, but you might notice your skin feels tight after showering, rough on your legs or elbows, or like you're constantly reaching for lotion.
That's when a richer moisturizer can be helpful.
Tallow Doesn't Have to Replace Your Lotion
This is something we wish more people understood about natural skincare.
You don't have to choose between lotion and tallow balm.
They serve slightly different purposes.
A well-formulated lotion contains water, which makes it lighter and provides hydration along with moisturizing ingredients.
A tallow balm is water-free and much richer.
So instead of thinking:
Lotion OR tallow?
Think:
What does my skin need today?
During hot August days, you may prefer a lightweight tallow lotion over your whole body.
Then use a tiny amount of whipped tallow balm on areas that need a little extra attention.
Hands.
Elbows.
Feet.
Knees.
Dry patches.
Or use your balm as part of your nighttime routine when you don't care about feeling quite as moisturized as you head out the door.
Try Tallow on Damp Skin

Here's one of our favorite ways to use tallow.
Don't completely dry your skin after your shower.
Leave it slightly damp.
Then warm a small amount of tallow balm between your hands and massage it into your skin.
Because tallow balm doesn't contain water, applying it over slightly damp skin gives you the benefit of that water underneath your moisturizer.
It's an incredibly simple way to make a water-free balm work beautifully in your routine.
But What About My Face?
This depends on your individual skin.
Some people love tallow as their primary facial moisturizer.
Others prefer it only at night or on particularly dry areas.
And some people simply prefer lighter facial products.
There's no rule saying that because tallow works beautifully for your body, you have to cover your face in it.
Natural skincare should still be personal skincare.
Pay attention to how your own skin responds.
August Is Actually the Transition Month

August feels like summer.
But it's also the beginning of something else.
Back-to-school routines return.
Days slowly get shorter.
You start to feel Fall in the air.
And before long, humidity starts dropping and cooler mornings return.
Instead of waiting until your skin feels noticeably dry this fall, August gives you a chance to begin adjusting your routine gradually.
Maybe that means keeping your lotion for daytime and introducing a tallow balm at night.
Maybe it's using balm only on your hands and feet.
Or maybe you're finally trying the little jar of tallow you've been curious about.
You don't need to overhaul your entire skincare routine overnight.
Start Simple
If you've been curious about tallow skincare but worried that it's going to feel heavy, greasy, or like something you should save for winter, start small.
Use less than you think you need.
Apply it to slightly damp skin.
Use it where your skin needs extra nourishment.
And give yourself a little time to figure out what works best for you.
Because good skincare isn't about using the most products.
It's about understanding what your skin needs—and choosing products that make sense for your life.
Even when it's 85 degrees outside.
